End-grain

‘End-grain’ is a pattern design developed for industrial woven fabrics suited for interior spaces and furniture upholstery. End-grain upholstery fabric is available and produced by Annala Oy – as a part of a collaboration with myself and Young Finnish Design Oy.

End-grain is reversible, scalable, and can be augmented with several weft color combinations. These prototypes are made using natural wool and cotton yarns.

The idea behind the End-grain pattern stems from bringing out the tree-ring textures of 25 individual oak blocks. As such, the blocks were aligned in rows and columns, (having nominal, uneven gaps between them), in which their surface textures and shape became embossed onto paper to make the pattern.

For me, the End-grain pattern is familiar; it reminds me of how wood is commonly found in a lumber yard – as a bundle of loosely stacked two-by-four boards that have been sifted through by other carpenters.
